Alabama Scholarships and Grants

Within the state of Alabama there are a significant number of scholarships and grants available to students planning to pursue a course of study or who are already enrolled in institutions of higher learning. These Alabama scholarships and grants vary by size and criteria to support a wide spectrum of programs of study and a diverse group of students.

National Guard Assistance Program

The Alabama National Guard Educational Assistance Program provides awards to be used for tuition, books, and educational fees for National Guard members in good standing. This non-need based awards is limited to $1,000 per year. Applications can be obtained from the Alabama National Guard units.

GI Dependents’ Education Benefit

The Alabama GI Dependents’ Educational Benefit Program provides educational awards to children and spouses of eligible Alabama veterans that have a partial disability at a minimum. The students or spouses must enroll in an Alabama public college or university. Awards cover tuition, fees, and books. Applications can be obtained from the Alabama State Department of Veterans Affairs office.

Scholarships for Dependents of Blind Parents

Alabama Scholarships for Dependents of Blind Parents are designated for children from families whose head of household is blind. The families must show that attending college is need-based. The award covers tuition and instructional fees. Applications can be obtained from the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services.

Student Grant and Assistance Program

The Alabama Student Grant Program provides student grants to residents of Alabama. The awards are up to a maximum of $1200 per year and are for undergraduate students in all majors. Applicants should contact the college or university of interest to obtain further information about the grants and how to apply.

The Alabama Student Assistance Program is a need-based program offering state/federal grants ranging up to $2500 per school year for undergraduate studies at eligible Alabama institutions. Awards are based on results from submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

Alabama Education Grant Program is a grant program for Alabama students attending a private non-profit institution. Applications can be obtained from the specific college that a student plans to attend. These institutions include Birmingham-Southern College, Concordia College, Faulkner University, Huntingdon College, Judson College, Miles College, Oakwood College, Samford University, Selma University, Southeastern Bible College, Southern Vocational College, Spring Hill College, Stillman College, and the University of Mobile.

American Legion Scholarship

The American Legion Scholarship Program provides grants for on-campus students for tuition, room and board, and other fees. Eligible students include the sons, daughters, grandsons, and granddaughters of veterans of World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, or other wars and who are Alabama residents. Auxiliary Scholarship Program

The American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship Program has similar criteria as the American Legion Scholarship Program. Programs for Police and Firefighter’s Survivors

Police Officer’s and Firefighter’s Survivor’s Educational Assistance Program awards grants to dependents of police officers or firefighters killed in the line of duty. The grants recipients must be Alabama residents and enroll in a public postsecondary educational institution in Alabama. Students can obtain the applications from the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, P O Box 302000, Montgomery, AL 36130-2000. The phone number is 334/242-2273.

Junior and Community College Athletics

The Junior and Community College Athletic Scholarship Program provides grants for tuition and books for students attending an Alabama public junior and community colleges. Applicants will have to demonstrate athletic ability through try-outs. To apply for the grants, the applicant should contact the head of the athletic program, the coach or the financial aid office at the desire institution.

Community College Performing Arts

The Junior and Community College Performing Arts Scholarship Program offers non-need based scholarships for students interested in the performing arts area and will attend a junior college or community college in Alabama. Scholarships are awarded based on talent that is determined through competitive auditions. Amounts are awarded up to the extent of in-state tuition. Students who are interested should contact the financial aid office at the desired junior college or community college.

Technology for Teachers

Technology Scholarship Program for Alabama Teachers (TSPAT) awards scholarships ranging up to $2298 for full-time, regularly certified, Alabama public school teachers who are taking technology courses at an Alabama college or university.

Nursing Scholarship Programs

The Alabama Nursing Scholarship Program provides scholarships to Alabama residents that pursue nursing degrees at Alabama colleges or universities. Applications can be obtained from the specific institution. More information can also be obtained from the Alabama Commission on Higher Education through their Grants and Scholarships Department. The Alabama State Nursing Scholarship is a $600 scholarship for Alabama residents who have been admitted to or are enrolled in clinical nursing courses at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing. Recipients must also work within the state of Alabama for one year following graduation. If this commitment is not fulfilled, the scholarship becomes a loan and must be repaid. Community Foundation Programs

The Central Alabama Community Foundation (CACF) provides annual scholarships to high school graduates in Montgomery, Elmore, Pike, and Lowndes counties. These scholarships, which total more than $50,000 each year, cover a variety of areas and requirements. Many are based on need and academic achievement. Alabama Senior Adult Programs

The Senior Adult Scholarship Program is geared toward older adults, 60 years and older. The scholarships cover tuition and are intended to encourage them to attend a public two-year postsecondary institution in Alabama. Information can be obtained from the specific institution’s financial aid office for senior adults who wish to pursue this program.

United Daughters of the Confederacy

The United Daughters of the Confederacy provides several different scholarships that apply to students residing in Alabama and pursuing an education at an institute of higher learning. Scholarship candidates are sponsored by the local chapters. UAB Scholarships

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) offers several scholarships solely for Alabama residents wishing to attend UAB. These scholarships include the Presidential, Golden Excellence, Collegiate Honors, UAB Breakthrough, and UAB Academic Achievement Scholarships. The scholarships vary in amount and merit requirements that are based on ACT scores and GPA.. All of these scholarships are renewable for four years and covers full tuition, fees, and housing. Blount Presidential Scholarship

The Blount Presidential Endowed Scholarship is open to Alabama residents only who have a minimum of 31 ACT score or 1360 ACT score and a 3.5 high school GPA. The candidates should be in enrolled in a civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or building science program at Auburn University. The scholarship award is $5,000 per year for four years. Application information can be obtained from the Auburn University Financial Aid Office.

Scholarships for Disadvantaged Areas

Advancement Scholarships are designated for incoming freshmen who reside in one of Alabama’s Black Belt counties or in an underrepresented county as identified by the State of Alabama Department of Education. Preference is also given to students who attend a high school on Auburn University’s list of priority schools. The list of Black Belt and underrepresented counties and the priority schools can be found online. In addition to these criteria, students must have a minimum of 3.25 GPA at their high school and complete the FAFSA application. The scholarship award is $5,000 per year for four years. Applications and other information can be obtained from the Auburn University Financial Aid Office.

Recruiting Teachers

Alabama Teacher Recruitment Incentive Program (ATRIP) is a scholarship program for Alabama high school seniors and professionals aspiring to be teachers in four critical areas of teaching. The areas are math, special education, general science, and English language arts.

First Time In-State Students

The University of Alabama offers several scholarships that are for first-time in-state students who have certain ACT or SAT scores and GPA averages of 3.5 or better. The Capstone Scholar, Collegiate Scholar, and Presidential Scholar offer awards of $1,500 per year, $3,500 per year, or full in-state tuition per year respectively. Information can be obtained by contact the university’s financial aid office or www.ua.edu.

Scholarships for Transportation Engineers

Two scholarships are available from the Alabama Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ALSITE). The Charles E. Alexander Transportation Engineering Scholarship is an award in the amount of $4,800 as is given to a student in an accredited Civil Engineering program at a university in Alabama. The Billy Jones Memorial Traffic Engineering Scholarship in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to students in the field of traffic engineering.

They must also be recommended by a member or affiliate member of the Alabama Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. Applications to apply for the scholarships can be obtained from the Civil Engineering Departments at Auburn University, the University of Alabama, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Candidates must be classified by the specific university as a junior or senior. Additional information can be obtained on the website at: www.alsite.org.

2 Year College Awards

The Alabama Two-Year College Academic Scholarship Program provides awards for in-state tuition and books at public two-year colleges in Alabama. Awards are based on merit and not on financial need. Applicants should contact the two-year college that they are interested in attending to get information on the scholarship.

Alabama Horse Council

The Alabama Horse Council provides several scholarships for Alabama students attending various programs of study related to the cattle industry, livestock industry, animal science, or agriculture at select colleges in Alabama. These scholarships range from $1000 to $4000 per year depending on the specific scholarship. Information about the different scholarships can be obtained from the Alabama Horse Council website at: www.alabamahorsecouncil.org.

The Horatio Alger Scholarships

Horatio Alger Alabama Scholarships are specified for Alabama undergraduate students who exhibit integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. The scholarships are based on critical family need and involvement of the student in co-curricular and community activities. Students can apply to both two-year and four-year colleges in Alabama. Information and applications can be assessed on the Horatio Alger Association website at www.horatioalger.com.

Second Year Students & Johnston Cabaniss

Johnston Cabaniss Scholarships are awarded to outstanding Alabama students entering their second year of any accredited law school in the United States. Applicants must be Alabama residents and must complete an application that can be found on the organization’s website at: www.alfinc.org. Awards are $5,000 for first place and $1,000 for second place.

Scholarships for Cancer Survivors

NW-SCC/American Cancer Society College Scholarships are provided to cancer survivor students that are legal residents of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, or Floyd or Clark counties in Indiana. Awards criteria are based on students that have had a diagnosis of cancer prior to age 21. Recipients must also satisfy need, merit, and community involvement and leadership criteria. Students must be pursuing a program of study in accredited two-year and four-year institutions. Those interested in studies at accredited vocational and technical schools are also considered. Information can be obtained from the Northwest-Shoals Community College website at: www.nwscc.edu.

Alabama Housing Authority Grants

The Alabama Housing Authority Education and Enrichment Fund, Inc. Public Housing Scholarship is awarded to Alabama students who reside in public housing. Recipients must provide proof of residence and acceptance at an institution of higher education. To obtain the application and additional information, applicants should contact the public housing manager in their local area.

Baptist Foundation Scholarship

The Alabama Baptist Foundation Scholarship is designated for Alabama residents and members in good standing of a Southern Baptist Church cooperating with the Alabama State Baptist Convention. The amount of the scholarships varies. Information can be obtained at the Baptist Foundation of Alabama at www.tbfa.org.

Math and Science Majors

The Alabama Math and Science Scholarship is available for Alabama residents attending an Alabama institution of higher learning and pursuing a teaching degree in math or science. Awards will be applied during the applicant’s junior or senior year in college. Recipients must commit to teaching for 5 years in a critical school system. Information can be obtained from the Alabama State Department of Education website at: www.alsde.edu.

Alabama Young Bankers Essay Scholarship provides a $1000 scholarship to Alabama high school senior who writes an essay based on criteria determined by the Alabama Bankers Association Essay Committee. More information can be obtained on the association’s essay submission page.

Office of School Personnel

The Alabama Association of School Office Personnel (AASOP) provides several $1,000 scholarships to students pursuing a degree from the college of business or K-12 education. The scholarships are awarded based on merit and financial need. Applications are can be obtained from the guidance counselor at the local high schools.

Farmer Scholarships

The Alabama Farmers Federation/Alfa Scholarships are available for students planning to attend or are enrolled in the Auburn University College of Agriculture or School of Forestry or who are majoring in agricultural engineering or agriculture education. Applications for the scholarships can be obtained from the College of Agriculture at Auburn University, county Farmers Federation offices, or local Alfa service centers.

Homebuilder Foundation Scholarship Information

The Alabama Homebuilders Foundation Scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in residential construction-related curricula at a college or technical school. Those pursuing an education in the home building industry can obtain the applications online at: www.ahbfoundation.org.

Alabama Law Foundation Scholarship Program

The Alabama Law Foundation Kids Chance Scholarships are awarded to students whose parent or parents have been permanently disabled or killed while on the job. The scholarships range from $500 to $2500 and are awarded annually. Students may apply each year that they are attending school. An application can be obtained from the foundation’s web site at www.alfinc.org.

ACEOA Scholarships

Alabama Conservation Enforcement Officer Association (ACEOA) Annual Scholarships are designated for officers or family members of ACEOA who are pursuing college educations. They also offer scholarships to non-member students pursuing a conservation, wildlife, environmental, or law enforcement degree. Applications and additional information can be obtained from the association’s website at: www.aceoa.org/programs

Robert Byrd Scholarship

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program provides $1,500 scholarships to approximately 15 high school graduates in each of Alabama’s seven U.S. congressional districts. Three students from each public or private high school may be nominated for the scholarship. Selection criteria are based on the ACT or SAT scores, overall grade point average (GPA); and the GPA in college preparatory subjects. Information on applying for the scholarships can be obtained from the high school guidance counselor.
